This spring a new building opened up in downtown McMinnville, Oregon. Locals and tourists alike continue to visit the newest development on 3rd Street known as KAOS McMinnville. Named after a long-gone local radio station, the new building currently houses two restaurants and a wine tasting room. More than that however, this building holds decades of local history in its very walls.

Walking into this building, an untrained eye may not notice the unique interior design choice featuring reclaimed timber. Reclaimed wood was salvaged from the previous building on the site as well as several Pacific Northwest barns. Our Reclaimed Timber Products team had the pleasure of recovering the Northwest barn wood and preparing it for the KAOS building. We deconstructed local barns and milled the wood to be repurposed as interior and exterior siding, tables and more.

The beauty of reclaimed wood, other than its unique physical characteristics, is that it carries the history of what it once was. The panelling on the first floor interior walls used to be the siding of an old barn. The rural and rustic character of the barnwood brings that same essence to the atmosphere of the restaurant. While this building is brand new, it feels like a place that’s been here for some time.

Discover the local history for yourself. Visit the 1882 Grille, The Barberry or the Oregon Wine Village all housed in KAOS in order to experience the unique atmosphere that each of them embody. Although reclaimed wood is used throughout the building, the different restaurants embrace dissimilar atmospheres, utilizing the wood in varying ways. Whether you like fine dining or a more casual burger and beer, this building (with the help from some reclaimed timber) provides a place where everyone feels welcome.

Reclaimed wood has much more to offer than meets the eye, especially if you’re just looking at a pile of old lumber. It has the versatility to create a variety of atmospheres with a wide variety of textures and appearances. Just take a visit to KAOS McMinnville and you’ll see.
